Claude Code
Connect Claude Code to MemPalace Cloud in two commands. The plugin installs the MCP connection, a memory skill that teaches Claude when to recall and save memories, and auto-save hooks that run every 15 messages and before context compaction.
Prerequisites
- A MemPalace Cloud account (free tier works)
- Claude Code installed
Installation
Run these two commands in your terminal:
claude plugin marketplace add cschnatz/mempalace-cloud-plugin
claude plugin install mempalace-cloud@mempalace-cloud
Restart Claude Code when prompted. On first use, a browser window opens for OAuth login — no API key needed.
What the plugin ships
Memory Protocol skill (v1.2.0) — teaches Claude:
- Discovery First — read the palace structure before writing
- Palace Structure — how to organize memories into wings, rooms, and drawers
- Save Decision Flow — a three-question flow (which wing, which room, which tool) to prevent flat dumps
- Anti-patterns — no silent creation, no generic dumps, no "everything into diary"
Auto-save hooks — run in the background:
- Stop hook — every 15 human messages, Claude is asked to save key topics, decisions, and lessons
- PreCompact hook — before context compaction, Claude saves everything so nothing is lost
You don't trigger the hooks yourself — Claude Code invokes them automatically.
Alternative: manual MCP setup
If you prefer not to use the plugin (no hooks, no skill), you can add just the MCP server:
claude mcp add mempalace-cloud --transport http https://api.mempalace.cloud/mcp -s user
For the memory protocol, paste the hosted instruction block into your ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md:
https://mempalace.cloud/skill-packs/claude-desktop-instructions.md
(That block is designed for paste-in contexts and is kept in sync with the plugin.)
Verification
Open Claude Code and ask:
"What do you know about my preferences?"
Claude should call mempalace_list_wings first (discovery), then mempalace_search or mempalace_kg_query before answering. You'll see the tool calls in the output.
To confirm the auto-save hooks are wired up, run /hooks in Claude Code. You should see two entries that reference the MemPalace plugin: a Stop hook and a PreCompact hook. If /hooks shows neither, the plugin install did not complete — re-run the two install commands above and restart Claude Code.
Updates
To update the plugin when a new version ships:
claude plugin marketplace update mempalace-cloud
claude plugin update mempalace-cloud@mempalace-cloud
Restart Claude Code to apply.
Troubleshooting
Claude says "I don't have memory tools"
Run claude mcp list — you should see mempalace-cloud with status connected. If not, reinstall the plugin.
OAuth login doesn't complete Make sure you have a MemPalace Cloud account and that your browser opened the login page. Pop-up blockers can interfere.
Memories captured but don't show up New memories land in your Inbox first. Items auto-approve after 24 hours if you don't review them.
Claude keeps saving everything into one wing You're running an older skill version. Update the plugin (see above) to get v1.2.0 with Discovery First and the Save Decision Flow.
/compact fails with "Compaction blocked by PreCompact hook"
You're on plugin v1.3.0 or older. The PreCompact hook in those versions blocked the first /compact call by design (running it twice succeeded). v1.3.1 silently approves — update with claude plugin marketplace update mempalace-cloud followed by claude plugin update mempalace-cloud@mempalace-cloud, then restart Claude Code.
